CMC Acute Stroke Unit offers the latest, most advanced treatment in a highly specialized environment. Our multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to stroke care ensures that patients receive the right intervention at the right time, and all care is delivered by experienced experts in a compassionate and personalized setting.

The unit provides better care to stroke patients manned by a specially trained stroke response team who work closely with our emergency service providers. Together, they quickly and appropriately identify and treat strokes. The designated team immediately assesses the patient's:

  •       Symptoms
  •       Time of onset of the symptoms
  •       Possible contributing risk factors

If the time of onset is less than four and one-half hours, the patient might be eligible for a clot-buster drug called tPA (tissue plasminogen activator). This drug will dissolve the existing clot and restore blood flow to the affected area of the brain. The patient must meet certain criteria to receive this drug, including:

  •       No history of trauma or surgery within the last three months
  •       PT/INR blood levels (coagulation studies) must be within defined parameters to reduce the risk of bleeding

  •       The benefits must outweigh the risks
  •       No history of brain tumor, aneurysms or recent stroke
  •       Blood sugar level between 60 and 400mg/dl
  •       Age greater than 18
  •       Patient and family consent

The CMC Acute Stroke Unit, also provides outstanding care for patients during and after a stroke. Our diagnostic tests help us determine the exact cause of the stroke. If we know what kind of stroke a patient has experienced, we can help prevent another stroke. We also provide education to patients and families regarding:

  •      Risk factors
  •      Lifestyle changes
  •      Signs and symptoms of a stroke
  •      When to get to the hospitalstroke1

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

mri1Capitol Medical Center continues to ensure that their patients receive world-class  healthcare. The institution acquired a new MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING, the Philips Ingenia 1.5T, is the first fully digital MRI machine in the Philippines. It offers a faster, more precise diagnosis.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the standard global diagnostic tool and the most modern non-invasive state-of-the-art diagnostic modality used by physicians to obtain vital information about a patient to guide them in their treatment. MRI utilizes magnetic fields, radio waves and computers to generate multi-planar images of the body.

Capitol Medical Center’s Philips Ingenia 1.5Tesla provides the largest and the most homogeneous  field of view in a commercial 70cm wide bore system & an excellent combination of magnet homogeneity & gradient performance. The new MRI system architecture delivers crystal clear images, remarkable speed and technology that makes radiofrequency upgrades a thing of the past.

When are MRI scans used?

An MRI scan can be used as an extremely accurate method of disease detection throughout the body and is most often used after the other testing fails to provide sufficient information to confirm a patient's diagnosis. In the head, trauma to the brain can be seen as bleeding or swelling. Other abnormalities often found include brain aneurysms, stroke, tumors of the brain, as well as tumors or inflammation of the spine.

Neurosurgeons use an MRI scan not only in defining brain anatomy but in evaluating the integrity of the spinal cord after trauma. It is also used when considering problems associated with the vertebrae or intervertebral discs of the spine. An MRI scan can evaluate the structure of the heart and aorta, where it can detect aneurysms or tears.

MRI scans are not the first line of imaging test for these issues or in cases of trauma. It provides valuable information on glands and organs within the abdomen, and accurate information about the structure of the joints, soft tissues, and bones of the body. Often, surgery can  be deferred or more accurately directed  after knowing the results of an MRI scan.
