The CMC Operating Room - We've Got It All !!!

The Operating Room (OR) Department at Capitol Medical Center is one among many departments in the hospital that has proven to be truly first-rate. Along with the Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology, the OR is a major contributor to the success of the institution. With its extensive range of available surgical procedures, advanced equipment and dedicated staff, it has become a leader in providing surgical care.

The department houses 8 operating theatres, an Endoscopy Unit, a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, a Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and a Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Care Unit. Different kinds of surgical procedures are performed routinely in the theaters, ranging from minor cases such as excision biopsies to major ones like craniotomies and thoracic and cardiovascular surgeries. It can cater to the diverse medical needs of both local and foreign clients. Patients also have access to the latest medical techniques and procedures such as laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries. Also, it is equipped with sophisticated facilities such as the Leica Microscope, Storz Laparoscopy, Infiniti Phaco Machine, Heart-Lung Machine among others.

One of the most outstanding qualities of the Operating Room Department is the exceptional expertise of the surgical teams that handle the daily stresses. The Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Doctor Maximino Elgar, is a renowned Surgeon and was one time the president of Philippine Society of General Surgeons (PSGS). He heads a team of competent Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, assisted by compassionate staff from the Supervisor to the Nurses and Orderlies who are likewise equipped with several years of experience in the area. They all work together to make the patients’ surgical experience pleasant and successful.

Running this tight ship requires a great deal of cooperation and communication amongst its crew. With challenging situations occurring on a regular basis, there is no shortage of learning experiences for everyone. Consequently, such pressures ultimately create better professionals out of us. Many doctors and nurses who have passed through the doors of the Operating Room Department at Capitol Medical Center have already prospered in both local and international scenes professionally aside from becoming better persons. Proof of this success is the thousands of patients who have been treated and were greatly satisfied with their surgical experiences. Some of them even got a second chance at life, thanks to the institution’s dedication to provide quality healthcare for all.

My 20 years of OR experience from being Staff Nurse up to the Supervisory level, has enhanced my skills from nursing care to decision making. I can now claim with pride that I hurdled the challenges in handling different situations from minor to complex surgeries and in coping with the Surgeons’ and Nurses’ peculiarities. There will be more people who will need expert surgical care and the Operating Room Department at Capitol Medical Center shall stand proud and ready to serve.
