The Worst Situation Brings Out The Best In CMC

By:  Rosemarie C. Dela Peña

It was September 26, 2009 when Typhoon Ondoy etched its niche in Philippine history. The heavy downpour that started in the early evening did not stop but instead continued its wrath until late in the afternoon.  It was not expected that the heavy rains would submerge Marikina and its neighbouring communities turning the area into a virtual ocean giving TV viewers the impression that this is the modern version of the biblical story on Noah’s Ark.  For Filipinos residing in the affected areas, it was a moment of distress as they tried to survive the raging waters that reached the roof of even two storey houses. For CMC workers, the rains rendered them helpless as they have to brace high waters to reach their homes. Many employees were left with no choice but to extend their working hours to cover for incoming colleagues who were trapped in flood waters. A few of them decided to spend the night in the hospital rather than risk their lives by braving the storm. At the dawn of September 27, the extent of devastation rendered the metropolis literally a picture of helplessness with all the murky mud and garbage the Filipinos had to deal with.  Prominent figures imbued with magnanimous hearts initiated fund raising drives to help the typhoon victims. Assistance in all forms started pouring in almost the same volume as the rains of Ondoy.

Considering that the metropolis was placed in a state of calamity, companies may have thought of 101 ways to assist their employees. Instead of donating to the fund raising campaigns initiated by celebrities CMC in its own distinct way focused on the welfare of its employees and decided to adhere to the famous phrase “CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME”. Supervisors were enjoined to check on their staff affected by the floods. Announcements were circulated donation boxes were placed in strategic locations. Management released a considerable amount of cash to purchase relief goods to be distributed to the employees. Groceries including canned goods, bread, toiletries, rice, bottled water and other necessities were packed and designated for the victims. To prove its sincere intentions, MANCOM members braved the rugged path to as far north as Bulacan, eastward to Cainta, San Mateo Rizal and Marikina to personally distribute the relief goods. This endeavour was undertaken without the glitz and glamour of media. The effort was acknowledged and probably appreciated by some while others werequite shy to express their gratitude. The experience of reaching out to our co employees was indeed overwhelming and has made us realize that there are more than a hundred reasons for us to be thankful for. It made us aware that life no matter how comfortable or disappointing it could seem still has to be appreciated for it gives us the opportunity to serve and be served by others. The outpouring of love, concern and encouraging words and gestures has made the situation lighter and easier to bear.  At this point, it was management’s turn to render tender loving care to its employees. While those victimized were given basic goods to help them cope with what seems to be the hardest phase of their lives, those who were bound to render service to patients and cover for their colleagues were likewise given due appreciation.  No effort remained unnoticed.  Ondoy may have left a devastating experience and worst memories for all of us. However, it brought out the best in each and every Filipino, serving its purpose of uniting young and old, rich and poor alike. As we go back to normal work and pick up the pieces from where Ondoy left, CMC employees are encouraged to set aside the horrible memories and look forward to a promising future ahead.  With prayers and positive outlook it will still be a fruitful year for everybody!!!
